Strep Throat: All You Need to Know

If your child is experiencing signs of strep throat in Edinburg and Mission, TX, Dr. Syed Husain at the Valley Pediatric Clinic can provide the diagnosis and the care they need to get back to being a kid.

What Is Strep Throat and How Is It Contracted?

Strep throat is an infection that impacts the throat and tonsils. It is caused by bacteria that live in the throat and nose of those who are infected. As such, it is spread to others through small droplets of bacteria that is dispersed while talking, sneezing, or coughing.

Once it is spread, the symptoms typically don’t show up immediately. It can take two or more days, meaning that it is often spread between children before the infected child even realizes that they are sick.

What Are the Signs of Strep Throat in Edinburg and Mission, TX?

Strep throat is considered a mild infection, but it can produce several uncomfortable and painful symptoms. The most common include:

  • Soreness in the throat that seems to come out of nowhere
  • Pain while swallowing
  • Red, swollen tonsils
  • Pus or white patches surrounding the tonsils
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Some children also experience headaches, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and rashes. If they are also experiencing pink eye, coughing, runny nose, and changes in their voice, it’s more likely that your child has a virus than strep throat.

How Is It Diagnosed and Treated?

Dr. Husain at Valley Pediatric Clinic can determine if your child has strep throat with a couple of quick steps. The first will be to ask about their symptoms and examine their throat and neck.

They will then swab your child’s throat and test the swab for signs of infection. Two separate tests are run on the swabs with children. The first is a rapid strep test, which can provide results very quickly.

The second is a throat culture, which takes a little more time but can pick up on infection that the rapid test could miss. This is extremely important for children as not treating strep throat can lead to more serious complications, like rheumatic fever.

After a diagnosis is confirmed, antibiotics are given to fight the infection. Most children begin to feel better within a couple of days. However, it’s important that they not return to school or daycare until they no longer have a fever.

If you’re concerned your child has strep throat in Edinburg and Mission, TX, schedule an appointment with Dr. Husain at Valley Pediatric Clinic by calling (956) 424-7100.
