Recognizing Symptoms of Strep

Know how to spot the differences between a simple sore throat and strep throat in Mission, and Edinburg, TX.

A sore throat caused by the streptococci bacteria is better known as strep throat. While sore throats caused by viruses will go away on their own without treatment, strep throat does require proper treatment to prevent complications. By turning to your pediatrician, Dr. Syed Husain, right away when your child starts to show signs of strep throat in Mission, and Edinburg, TX, you can prevent the spread of infection and help your child feel better faster.

What are the warning signs of strep throat?

It can be challenging to spot the differences between strep throat and a sore throat. Strep throat often produces more severe and intense symptoms such as a painful, raw, and red sore throat. Other distinct signs and symptoms of strep throat include:

  • White patches on the back of the throat, including the tonsils
  • Red spots on the roof of the mouth
  • Rash on the body
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Fever

It’s more common for children to develop strep throat than adults, so if your child is experiencing any of these symptoms it’s important that you visit our practice for treatment.

When should I see a pediatrician?

While the symptoms listed above should have you come into our practice for an evaluation, it’s a good idea to come into our office if your child’s sore throat lasts more than a week, keeps coming back, is causing persistent hoarseness, or is leading to dehydration. Even if the cause isn’t strep, your pediatrician can determine what’s causing their symptoms to help your little one feel better fast.

How is strep throat treated?

Since strep throat is a bacterial infection, this problem will not go away on its own. However, antibiotics are incredibly effective at treating this infection. This is something that our team can prescribe to your child when they come into our office for care. Within the first 24 hours of taking antibiotics, your child should not be contagious anymore, and they should start feeling better about 2-3 days after starting their dose of antibiotics. It’s important to note, that they should finish their entire round of antibiotics even once they start to feel better.

If your child is showing any symptoms of strep throat in Mission, or Edinburg, TX, turn to your pediatricians. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Husain, call Valley Pediatric Clinic at 956-424-7100 or 956-383-9300.
