The Importance of Hearing and Vision Screenings

Most people assume that a child’s eyes are young and healthy; however, thanks to all the time we now spend in front of computer screens or blasting music through headphones, children are developing hearing and vision issues early. It is the job of our Mission, TX and Edinburg, TX, board-certified pediatricians Dr. Syed Husain and Dr. Sumbul Naqvi to catch these problems early through regular hearing and vision screenings.

Vision Screenings

Your newborn will get their first vision screening during their six-month checkup and then again at three years old and between 5-6 years old. Even if your child’s vision is great it’s still important that they get annual checkups, as vision changes can cause kids to fall behind in school.

Especially with all the reliance on technology and the number of time kids are spending staring at screens, it’s important for kids to get a regular hearing and vision screenings from our Mission, TX and Edinburg, TX, a pediatrician. We can provide helpful tips for giving your kid’s eyes a break every day and offer up ways to reduce dry eye, eye strain, and headaches caused by electronic usage.

Vision screenings are incredibly important for your growing child. The National Commission on Vision & Health (NCVH) found that 25 percent of children between the ages of five to 17 had vision problems and that nearly 80 percent hadn’t even seen an eye care professional in the last year. Many don’t even receive follow-up care after their first vision screening. The data is clear! We need to make sure our school-aged children are getting vision screenings every year.

Hearing Screenings

We can’t forget the importance of hearing screening, as well. These screenings help our pediatric team detect hearing loss and other issues that could delay language and impair learning. Children should get hearing screenings,

  • Before starting school
  • At 6, 8, and 10 years old
  • At least once during middle school and high school

If your child has any speech or developmental delays, then your pediatrician may recommend having their hearing tested more regularly.

Valley Pediatric Clinic offers hearing and vision screenings among a wide range of other pediatric services to children and teens here in Mission and Edinburg, TX. If you need to schedule your child’s next screening, give us a call today at (956) 424-7100 or (956) 383-9300.
